James Benjamin - He's Two and a Half (PLUS)!

Somehow JB is now 2 and a half.  And he has been for a full month.  Technically he's 31 months today, and we're inching closer to three now.

There is a big difference between 2 and 2.5, and it amazes me how much JB changes each day.  Do I say that every update?  I do, because it's true.  I remember a few months ago that I wrote JB had very few words.  Now JB repeats everything you say and speaks in sentences and phrases!!  A couple of months ago he was in diapers.  Now he'll run off to the bathroom by himself and run back into the room when he's done his business. He remembers things, too, and can remind you of things discussed a few days prior.

JB has done very well with the transition to the new home.  Dare I say he gets a little more flexible the older he gets?  We've only had a couple of instances in the beginning where he asked to go to his "other home", and he asks about White Hall Tavern sometimes for dinner.  He told me Isla would be at his new school (broke my heart), but also tells everyone excitedly about his new school and new teacher, Ms. Nee Nee. Now he frequently tells me he wants to go to his "new house" when we're out and about.  He loves the land, his room, the playroom, and the porches. He also loves to run back and forth between his room and sissy's room through the Jack-n-Jill bathroom. (He normally does this naked - the boy loves to streak!)

Words we typically use to describe JB: sweet, handful, smart, rascal, ball-of-energy, cheeky, funny, loud.  He can throw a tantrum pretty quickly if he's tired or not getting his way.  This past month he's gotten very acquainted with his new time-out chair, but has also started to curb some naughty behavior now that he realizes we all mean business.  JB doesn't just say "no" he says "no, no, no, no" for added emphasis.  Maryn was squealing at Sunday lunch the other day and JB yelled "No, no, Sissy, people twying to EAT!" in the loudest voice you can imagine. Wonder where he learned that phrase?? :)  He also greats his sister with "Hey Sissy!!" every morning when we go into her room. Such a sweetie.

Some things that JB loves:  cereal bars, fruit (especially oranges and pears), cauliflower, sauteed spinach, shrimps, pancakes, puffs (if we spell p-u-f-f-s in front of him he knows what we're talking about. genius child??), hot milk (which he calls "hot dilk" even though he can say his m's), cold water, chasing Daddy, being chased by Daddy, rough housing, "driving" the car, dinosaurs, tractors, school buses, his little sister (who he calls "Ma-wyn", but mostly "Sissy"), nursery rhymes, singing/yelling songs, working with his tools, colored bath water, Peppa Pig, snuggling in our bed in the morning, all his grandparents, and his Mama and Daddy.  In JB's ideal world his entire family would be together at all times at his "new house".  He's a little home body who loves his people.

JB doesn't like: almost all meat, hair washing, hot bath water, leaving the park, hitting his screen-time limit for the day, time out, the three minutes after Mama or Daddy drop him off at school or the church nursery, using an inside voice.

We love you sweet James Benjamin.  Our little 2-and-a-half year old son.  Keep doing what you're doing, even when you make us crazy, because we love every little thing about you.

Lots of New Things!

This weekend we tried out all sorts of new things here in our new town.

First, we shopped the local Farmer's Market.  We brought home delicious lettuce and kale, a strawberry cake, and some homemade pork skins.

Cool Cats

Get in my belly!

Maryn also tried out piggies (though not fried, rather in her hair).  Soooooo precious, although she's already protesting when I mess with her hair. She has a sensitive scalp like her Mama, I'm afraid...

Piggies!
JB also tried out some Tory's, but I am not sure they go with the John Deere shirts he insists on wearing every day.

Stylin'

Enda tried/stole a Chick Fila milkshake...

caught in the act

YUM!
...and also tried a baby Mockingbird that she stole from a nest in one of our bushes.  :(

This is now the second baby animal she's killed in front of us since we moved (the first a baby squirrel), and it doesn't get any less traumatic for her humans. Ah, country living.

Maryn had lentils for the first time - jury is out on this one.  They have texture (not her favorite thing) but she didn't refuse them.  Success??  (This was the first baby food I actually made for Maryn - other than her milk, of course - because poor second child.....  Gerber doesn't make Lentils so I had to get out the old food processor.)

not sure about this one, Mama..
Lastly, we tried another church this Sunday.  I met someone at Chick Fila this week (a separate meal from the milkshake fiasco - we go too much!) and she invited me to their Sunday school at First Methodist.  The service, the group, the Sunday School, the nursery - all lovely and we felt at home.  Answered prayer!

(And you better believe I had the kiddos in all sorts of smocking nonsense for their first Sunday. They looked adorable!)

It was a great weekend that made us think, hey, we are doing quite nicely here in our new home!  It's been a month now, and lots of smiles on the Sasser faces.

Fun on the Farm

Perks of moving to a rural town - trips to the farm!  JB went on his first school field trip, and lucky Mama got to take off a couple hours to join him.  SO MUCH FUN.  JB's comfort level around barnyard animals has increased greatly, I might add.  Zero tears, and he actually touched a few.  :)

The Meadowbrook Farm owners graciously opened up their place to the entire preschool, and JB quickly found his new little friends and teacher, Ms. Nee Nee.  He proudly dropped off his lettuce and carrots for the horses, and listened intently about all the animals.

Farmer JB
We saw bunny rabbits (all girl rabbits, as the farm lady said she's not in the "rabbit raising" business, cue laughing from all the adults).

There were also llamas, which were a huge hit with JB.  He is a big fan of the Llama Llama books, and he kept asking to see them.  I thrilled JB with my knowledge that llamas "spit".  Sometimes Mama knows just the right thing to say to her 100% boy...

No spitting!
There were very friendly goats, and brave JB pet and patted many of them.

fast friends!
There were chickens and an enormous aviary.  Lots of birds to entertain the kiddos.

Lastly we saw horses, ponies, miniature donkeys (I want one!), and some type of mini cows?  JB fed the donkeys some carrots. I would have bet money against JB feeding the animals, but he surprised me!

this is HUGE
The kiddos got snacks afterwards - Kool Aid, rice crispy treats, fruit gummies, and goldfish. I almost made JB eat one of the donkey's baby carrots, for balance. :)

A beautiful day!  So grateful for the special memories with my little guy.

JB's First Day of (New) School

It's never easy to move and switch schools, no matter how old you are. I was a bit anxious for little JB, who's not always the most flexible, easy going kiddo.  He loved his old school in Atlanta so much, but it took months (so long!) to get to that point.

James did all the legwork here in our new town to find a part-time preschool at a local church.  And he picked a good one. When JB and I walked in to introduce ourselves before his first day, I quickly noticed how comfortable he was with the room, the new friends, and the teachers.  Everyone welcomed him (and us) quickly into the group.

The real test came on JB's first day of school, when we dropped him off that morning.  Not without pictures first!

(JB insisted that he hold his fruit snack for this last picture. Toddlers. Such irrational little stinkers.)

And JB did great!  Some tears, as expected, but Ms. Nee Nee reported they stopped quickly and he fit in so well with the other kids.  JB would not stop talking about Ms. Nee Nee all week, and I can tell he really likes her.

He will attend three mornings a week in a "young 2s" class, and on Wednesday will attend chapel with the entire preschool. We look forward to seeing him learn and grow, both in his A-B-Cs and his spiritual journey.

Good Times with My Girls

Ladies, let us not underestimate the power of a girls' trip.  There is something so invigorating about female companionship and uninterrupted time together to talk (and talk and talk) about our lives, our families, our careers and our feelings.  There is such validation with girlfriends that, no, you're not crazy!  Well, or that you're all crazy together.  Plus, throw in a beach, some champagne, endless snacks - GIRL TRIP PERFECTION.

My 5 besties from the Deloitte days all met in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina this past weekend (sans kids or SOs). This is our third trip since we stopped working together (first in Florida, second in Atlanta), and we've now had seven children between us.  I bunked up with the other girl who has two kiddos, so lots of "oh-my-gosh-my-house-is-so-crazy" conversations into the wee hours of the morning.

Our friend, Nancy, just bought her beautiful dream beach house.  A great accomplishment for her (and how lucky are we to be her friends!!)

Nancy and her palace

The weekend consisted of eating, drinking and gabbing.  Some walks on the beach, too, when the wind didn't blow us away.  We could also see the beach from the safety on the porch and rocking chairs - which is where we chose to sit most of the day.

coffee with a view

Jen gifted us with monogrammed champagne flutes (in acrylic, very smart).  We made good use of them all weekend.

Three times we headed into town.  Once on foot, as we walked around a large loop on the island.

We had lunch at a little pub in the sun, made another trip for more champagne, and also bought t-shirts for the littles in hopes of photoshopping a combined kiddo picture (fingers crossed).

We also forgot Jen in the back of the car....

Twice...

Saturday afternoon involved a little nap on the porch, which felt like Heaven.  We were interrupted by a group of fraternity brothers renting the house next door, and they came over to talk to us about the "real world".  (As in, they are graduating and think their life is over. We assured them it's not.  I've never felt more old, haha.)

naptime
we promise that 30s/40s is not that old, dear boy
Saturday evening included fancy dress and seafood on the water.  And being sad that the trip we had planned for so long was coming to an end!

I flew home early Sunday morning, rejuvenated and happy (maybe with a slight champagne headache). Love these girls and can't wait for the next trip!  Let's get it on the calendars - Chicago 2017?
