James Benjamin - Three Months Old!

James Benjamin is THREE MONTHS OLD!

Month Three started off a little hard, similar to my Month Two update.  JB's reflux still gave him trouble, his tummy was still off, and the little guy just wanted to cry, scream, and wail all the time.  Because Mama worked several days in early December, he spent those days with his new nanny and cried the whole day.   Bless her heart - the poor lady was super sweet and patient (and has promised she will return in January, thank goodness!)  After a good drive to Texas for the holidays, JB proceeded to cry for four straight hours after we arrived.  Lord have mercy!

But then...I don't know what happened...maybe we finally got his Prevacid dosing right?  Maybe the milk and soy is completely out of my (and thus, his) system?  Maybe there is really something magical about the 12 week mark?  JB is finally starting to feel better and enjoy life!  It was a Christmas miracle!

The last week of Month Three was so different than the rest of the month.  JB now smiles a lot.  He has started to squeal with delight if you talk to him.  Although we haven't heard full blown laughs, he's definitely trying to giggle a bit when something is really entertaining.  With a little prompting, he'll "talk" back to you.  Or sometimes we'll hear him "talking" to the birds hanging above his bouncy chair.  What's more, he's very content to just sit, watch, and explore his surroundings.  It's like we can actually see his little brain thinking "what is that?!" It's been so much fun!

Now, he still has his moments.  Even in this new smiley phase, he can lapse into a full blown tantrum in a matter of seconds for whatever reason (hungry, dirty, wants his Mama, someone tries to give him a bottle, it's Tuesday, etc).  I'm not going to confess that we have this little rascal figured out yet, but I feel so much better that we're progressively getting more smiles than tears!

JB's Measurements:
  • Weight: close to 13lbs? (No wellness visit this month, so I'm basing this off our haphazard attempts on the bathroom scale)
At 3 Months Old, JB...

...Eats every 2 - 2.5 hours, and has regressed slightly at night to eating every 3 - 4 hours.  Growth spurt?  (I know I say that every single week, so he can't possibly be growing that much, right?!)  After struggling tremendously with the bottle for the first half of the month, we gave JB an early Christmas present of no bottles during our break in Texas.  Although he's now nursing 100% of the time, we'll start bottle boot camp in January.

...Sleeps better (or at least consistently) during the day!  We're learning that his routine includes a lot of 45 minute naps, but since he takes quite a few of them I don't worry too much (for now).  If we run errands during the day and he's snoozing in his car seat, he'll sleep forever.  (This worked to our advantage on the 14 hour car trip to Texas!)  At night he was giving me some longer stretches (5-6 hours), but now he's gone back to eating every 3 - 4 hours.  Oooooh well. We're also at a cross roads about where he needs to sleep.  With his reflux we want to keep him slightly inclined, but we also need to get this boy in a crib.  Elevating the crib results in the little guy waking up upside down (as he moves around quite a bit - even swaddled).  Our goal this month is to wean him out of the rock-n-play (and maybe out of the swaddle, if we're feeling like true gluttons for punishment....)

...Wears mostly 3 month clothes.  His 0-3 month clothes still fit him, although it usually means 3/4 sleeves and low scoop necklines.  He's still in Size 1 diapers, but a couple of poop-splosions that escaped the diaper have me thinking that we'll move up a size fairly soon.

...Loves funny faces; attention; being held; being outside; lounging on his back; "talking" (baby babbling); "standing" (putting weight on his legs); chewing on his hands

...Does not enjoy red lights or when we're not moving in the car; any type of bottle; being hungry; long naps.

...Has mixed emotions about tummy time (but he's liking it more and more!)

Third Month Milestones:
  • First Road Trip to the Promised Land (Texas)
  • First Christmas
  • "Talking"
  • Rolls front the back
  • Found his hands, and can bring them together (and to his mouth)

Month Three - this little guy is starting to feel better and be happier.  And he shows it.  YEA!!
